Core & Elective Descriptions

Core and elective rotations in London and as per the list below, are arranged by Sharon Story, Dept. of Family Medicine. Many of the London core/elective rotations need to be integrated into a city-wide hospital schedule.

The following are elective guidelines:
  • PGY1 and PGY2 electives are chosen from a supplied list. Not all elective rotations are listed or have descriptions
  • PGY2 electives must be chosen in consultation with your Family Medicine supervisor
  • Electives must be chosen among disciplines related to Family Medicine
  • Electives must be 1 block in duration (part of a block is not acceptable)
  • Elective location (ie. City) flexibility may be required due to capacity limitations.
  • Electives not on the supplied list can be taken out of Southwestern Ontario (or Ontario) with a member of an accredited CANADIAN medical school, with appropriate supervision (maximum 3 rotations total). This needs to be put forth IN WRITING by May 31st to Mr. Fred Ross, Education Coordinator, Family Medicine Postgraduate Program, giving details: rotation name, block(s) of rotation, supervisor name, address, telephone #, email address, hospital affiliation, and the objective for the rotation (either the objectives provided by the experience or a list of personal objectives from you)
  • PGY2 electives taken out of Ontario: Resident needs to acquire an educational licence in province of elective (this needs to be done early, since the paperwork can require up to 3 months). The resident will also require a letter from Western's Family Medicine Postgraduate Director that will need to be sent to the Postgraduate Office of the university involved in the elective
  • PGY2 out-of-country electives: the resident is responsible for arranging his/her own licensure and malpractice insurance. As well, information about the preceptor (e.g. supervisor name, address, telephone & fax numbers, email address, type of practice, how long he/she has been in practice, affiliation with university, license information) and confirmation that the preceptor can accommodate you on the rotation are required. Pre-departure training through the Office of Global Health (http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/globalhealth) is mandatory.
  • One elective rotation only outside of Ontario is permitted, either in another province or outside of Canada.
  • Preceptor payments are not available to non-Western faculty.

Once your electives are requested and confirmed, they may only be cancelled or rearranged (for educational reasons after the schedule comes out) as per the guidelines in the Resident Handbook (http://www.familymedicineuwo.ca/PostGrad/Leaves/RotationChange.aspx) and as outlined below:

TO CHANGE A ROTATION: A signed "Request for Change of Rotation” form has to be picked up from Sharon Story. It also has to be signed by the preceptor who is agreeing to release the resident from the rotation and the preceptor who agrees to accept the resident for the rotation. Once the form has been signed, it should be sent to Sharon Story, Dept. of Family Medicine, 2nd Floor, Clinical Skills Bldg., The University of Western Ontario, London ON N6A 5C1, so that she can update the schedule.

It is the resident's responsibility to keep Sharon Story advised about any changes to their schedule.
