Rural Family Medicine

Two Months Family Medicine Rural Component (For Urban Residents)
Guidelines:
  • The timing of your Family Medicine rural experience has been established and is listed on your schedule.
  • We will do our best to arrange your assignment to family medicine practices according to your choices. Where necessary, accommodation and travel expenses will be provided and paid according to existing Dept. of Family Medicine policy.
  • The rural or small community practice for such an experience must be chosen from the list provided by the postgraduate program of practices within our catchment area and must be staffed by a preceptor, who has an appointment in the Department of Family Medicine.
  • All rural rotations are scheduled according to the availability of the various locations. The rural or small community must not occur in a city/town with an academic health science centre or tertiary care hospital.
  • The rural or small community practice must provide for exposure to a full spectrum family practice that commonly includes working in two or more settings. The practice must include office practice plus two or more of the following: inpatient care, emergency shifts or coverage, intrapartum obstetrics, house calls, surgical assisting, GP-anesthesia, nursing home or chronic hospital care.
  • The preceptor must provide care that qualifies as listed above, but additional clinical experiences can be provided by other physicians in the rural or small community with the approval of the preceptor.
  • Preceptor payments are not available to non-Western faculty.
