Palliative and End of Life Curriculum

Purpose:

• To enrich residents’ experience in palliative care beyond that offered during family medicine training
• To ensure residents meet objectives in palliative care as required by CFPC accreditation standards

Key Features:

• Mandatory experience for all residents
• Resident will indicate preference for the type of rotation
• Yearly or biannual mandatory palliative care education day as part of academic program

Available Rotation choices:

#1: 1-month In-patient palliative care experience (with consult component) at LHSC-VC

#2: 1-month Palliative care consult service at LHSC-UH

• Inpatient palliative consults and follow-up

#3: 1-month Windsor:

• Priority goes to Windsor residents
• Hospice/residential home care (60%) and home visits (40%); rarely hospital consults

#4: 8 half-days horizontal experience during Family Medicine block time:

• 4 half-days at LRCP Friday clinics: either am or pm
• 4 half-days with community palliative care physicians doing home visits

#5: 1-month Palliative Care experience with Dr. Ingrid Harle. The rotation would include the following activities:

• Inpatient palliative care at LHSC-VC and Parkwood Hospital
• Outpatient assessments in the Palliative Care Clinics at LRCP
• Home visits
