Enrichment/Horizontal Elective

Horizontal electives used to be standard in family medicine block time when we had six-month blocks. They were stopped when we changed to the four-month block time because of the concern about the amount of time spent in family medicine. A review of the accreditation guidelines has indicated that residents must spend a minimum of six half days per week in family medicine training during family medicine block time. This gives us some leeway to allow residents a little more flexibility to gain some additional skills that they may have missed out on during the course of their training. It is provided for PGY2 residents ONLY, since we feel that PGY1 residents would benefit mostly from staying in their family medicine block time situations.

Policy:
  1. PGY2 family medicine residents, who are doing well in their program and who have the approval of their family medicine preceptor, may arrange a horizontal elective during family medicine block time amounting to one half day per week for a total of six weeks.
  2. The horizontal elective can be arranged individually by residents contacting the people of their choice and/or they may receive assistance from their preceptor.
  3. The choice of horizontal elective must be discussed with the family medicine supervisor and approved as being suitable for family medicine additional skills training.
  4. The family medicine resident will receive an evaluation at the conclusion of their elective time or daily evaluations if that is satisfactory with the elective. This evaluation would be placed on the residents file.
  5. Examples of such electives experiences might include: fracture clinic, breastfeeding clinic, family planning clinic, HIV clinic, homeless program, nursing home rounds, etc.
