Resident Project Requirements

By the end of PGY1:
  • A one page summary of your project must be submitted to your Supervisor for approval as well as the Resident Project Coordinator for approval . The summary must include:
    • Your Name
    • Your Project Supervisor
    • Project Type
    • Project Title
    • Rationale (why is this an important Family Medicine question/topic to investigate?)
    • Proposed Methods (how are you going to answer your question or address your topic?)
    • Proposed Data Analysis (if applicable)
    • Work Plan (timeline/how you intend to carry out your project)
  • This document should be fairly short and concise, however it should help your organize and plan your project. The purpose of the proposal is:
    • To ensure the project is feasible within the given time frame
    • To ensure the project is of scholarly grade
  • Your project proposal must be reviewed by your Supervisor, as well as the Resident Project Coordinator by the end of your PGY1 year.
Project Requirements:
  • Projects must be accompanied by an abstract of approximately 250 words describing the project and its key message or findings. For more information on how to write an Abstract click here.
    • Abstract Format:
      • Your Name
      • Project Title
      • Body of abstract: No more than 250 words including the objective of the project, methods, key findings and conclusions or key messages
      • Saved file should include your name (E.g., Abstract -DBrook)
Submission Requirements:
  • Once your project is completed it must be reviewed and approved by the Resident Project Coordinator. Please send your project at least 2 weeks before your submission deadline to ensure that she can provide you with appropriate feedback.
  • Your project must also be reviewed and approved by your Supervisor before it is submitted to the Department of Family Medicine for evaluation. Please ensure that your Supervisor signs your Resident Project Submission Form to confirm that they have reviewed your project.
  • Submission Deadlines:
    • Residents starting on or after July 1st, 2009 - the submission date of your project is 4 months prior to the end of your PGY2 year.
      • February 28th for those who start on July 1st.
      • June 30th for those who start on October 20th.
Please note you must submit your project by February 28th to participate in Resident Project Day and to be eligible for Resident Project Awards.
  • Complete the Resident Project Submission Form and submit it along with ONE HARD COPY of your project by the deadline directly to the Resident Project Coordinator (2nd floor Clinical Skills Building, Department of Family Medicine). 
  • You must also submit electronic versions (CD or E-mail) of your abstract and project to the Resident Project Coordinator.
  • Residents who will be submitting their projects in the Fall who did not participate in Resident Project Day must:
    • Present your project to your Family Medicine training site.
    • An email must be sent from your family medicine supervisor/preceptor to the Resident Project Coordinator with the date, time and location. Please send this information prior to the presentation so the Resident Project Coordinator can plan to attend.
*NOTE: You will not be accepted into the PGY3 Program unless you have completed ALL of the PGY2 requirements.
