TRAINING SITE/PRACTICE DESCRIPTIONByron Family Medical Centre, London

Byron Family Medical Centre (BFMC) is affiliated with the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and the Department of Family Medicine of the University of Western Ontario. It is located in the southwest part of London near Springbank Park. Four teaching teams, each consisting of a staff physician, family practice nurse and two residents dedicate themselves to providing optimal health care to their patients integrated with quality education and research. BFMC is a family health organization and part of the Thames Valley Family Health Team.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The education of family medicine residents and medical students is a major commitment of the Byron Family Medical Centre. This education, both formal and informal, is carried out on a day-to-day basis and serves to promote the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes for the practice of family medicine.

  • Palliative care: Patients’ homes
  • Obstetrics: London Health Sciences Centre – Victoria Hospital
  • Elderly care: Office, nearby long-term care facilities
  • Procedural room on-site
  • House calls are part of regular patient care
  • Academic activities:
    • Teaching every Wednesday morning
  • Mental health care: Residents may participate in care concurrently with psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse clinician

  • Fully-equipped procedural room for office-based minor surgical procedures and casting

  • Shared Mental Health Care Program: a psychiatrist and a nurse clinician provide on site consultations one and a half days a week
