TRAINING SITE/PRACTICE DESCRIPTION St. Joseph’s Family Medical Centre, London

The St. Joseph's Family Medical and Dental Centre (SJFMDC) is affiliated with St. Joseph's Health Care London and is located in the northwest section of London near the university campus. A senior citizens' complex and married students’ quarters are located nearby. SJFMDC is composed of five teaching teams. Each team consists of a staff physician, two residents and a family practice nurse. SJFMDC is a family health organization and will soon be a part of the Thames Valley Family Health Team. 

PATIENT PROFILE

The patient mix on each team ranges from infancy to very elderly.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

SJFMDC is dedicated to providing the best educational experience possible for the residents. We pride ourselves with a comprehensive academic curriculum

  • Faculty to resident ratio: 1:2
  • Hospital care: London Health Sciences Centre – University Hospital
  • Palliative care: Patients’ homes and London Health Sciences Centre – University Hospital
  • Obstetrics: St. Joseph’s Health Care and London Health Sciences Centre – Victoria Hospital
  • Elderly care: Office, residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph, on-call care for nearby long-term care facilities
  • Procedural room on-site
  • House calls are part of regular patient care
  • Academic activities:
    • There is a Wednesday morning academic curriculum with teaching done by faculty as well as residents
    • Chief resident organizes lunch rounds about twice per week
  • Mental health care: Residents may participate in care concurrently with psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse clinician

  • Shared Mental Health Care Program: a psychiatrist and a nurse clinician provide on site consultations one and a half days a week

  • Primary Care Diabetes Support Program: a physician, nurse practitioner, diabetes educator, dietitian and a social worker offering comprehensive diabetes care and diabetes case management.
