Student Testimonials

"The thing that I found most surprising about Walkerton was the scope of practice both of the family doctors practicing there, as well as the hospital itself (for example it is the only hospital in the area with a CT scan). For a medical student eager to learn, this is an excellent site, with no shortage of hands-on experiences. The primary supervisor, Dr. Paul McArthur who is a family doctor who does anaesthesia who also has an office-based practice, works in the ER, delivers babies, does in-patient work as well as some surgical assisting. If just keeping up with him wasn’t enough, there are many other physicians in the area who are willing to teach. I spent of time in the OR, where I had the option of scrubbing in for every case (after doing the anaesthesia with Dr. McArthur). I also got to be involved in managing some complicated in-patients on the ward.

I visited the local jail with another family doctor, and got to see the diverse problems of this interesting subset of patient. I spent some time with an internist from London, a urologist and a radiologist. There are several other specialists that visit Walkerton including a dentist and an ENT surgeon. No matter what a student’s interest, it is possible to tailor the learning towards it. As a supervisor, Dr. McArthur was great at letting a student do as much as possible, and making sure that a student was having a great experience. The rest of the staff were also very good about calling me if anything interesting was going on (for example getting paged for procedures, and called for deliveries)

This rotation was excellent not only for the amount I learned but also in terms of discovering the incredible scope of family medicine outside of an academic center." ( Ana Igric, Meds 2008)
