General
Description
The
Primary Care practice of the London Intercommunity Health Centre is staffed by
6 part-time physicians, 4 nurse practitioners, 5 social workers, 2 dietitians
and several registered nurses. The nature of the practice is defined by the
following parameters:

Patient population-
the Centre's client base is approximately 50% refugees and immigrants from
a number of countries. The remaining 50% are from across the City of
London, but concentrated in the Old East Village area and the north east
corner of the city. All experience barriers to receiving mainstream health
and social services.

Students
will be exposed to primary care in a multicultural urban setting with
exposure to issues of poverty, single parenthood, domestic violence,
street health, with a large focus on psychiatric illness, addictions and
chronic illness. There is also a unique diabetes care program which
operates at the Centre.

Centre
Approach - the Centre uses an interdisciplinary holistic approach to
health care with an emphasis on health promotion and preventive care
practices.

Also
employed by the Health Centre are more than 20 community workers, outreach
workers and WrapAround facilitators also providing a variety of supports
to clients.
